We’re Going On A Resiliency Hunt – We’re Going To Find An Empowering One

written by Lorrie Holmes February 22, 2022

We can’t go over it.

We can’t go under it.

We have to go through it.

This is a musical story that I am so excited to be using and also adapting for young learners in my Creative Arts classes. Whether it be the original story concept of the bear hunt, or something a little bit different such as a dino tour, the premise of having to go through obstacles instead of around or over them remains the same along with the message that this is the only way to work through many of those unexpected challenges that life throws at us.
As an early childhood educator who specializes in implementing music, movement and stories into my curriculum, I plan to use this story concept in all of my themes throughout the school year so these preschool aged children can really grasp this concept in many different scenarios and by using the original story in various ways.
Starting off this concept with Michael Rosen’s book, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt – this was the the perfect introduction to such a fun winter theme while exploring hibernation and adaptation.

It was so much fun coming up with a three dimensional story for the children to play with and move around to the pages of this story afterwards. We sung each scenario and acted it out with the finger puppets and the turf for tall wavy grass, the playdough dark cold river, the decorative board pieces and cotton balls for the dark forest and swirling-whirling snowstorm. Then we found the perfect chocolate brown weaved basket and plush polar bear to finish off our story!

Next Up – We’re Going On A Dino Tour!

After finishing up with our hibernation theme we have recently moved onto Dinosaurs! This has been so much fun – teaching the children about all their favourite dinos and we were lucky enough to have a super fun Dino theme package from Sensory Mama Creations to use for our story basket!
PRODUCT REVIEW – this Dinosaur Explorer Playdough Sensory Kit is a very well thought out and adorable homemade package this is the PERFECT ready made kit for a Dino story basket or a sensory play activity in an early learning environment. You can order it here. It was so much fun setting up this package on our story board at CEFA South Delta in the JK2 classroom for my Dino Tour musical story. The children loved it and loved playing with afterwards. The pipe cleaner trees were fun and creative and the perfect combination of colours that the dins toys could easily move through. Also, the orange playdough was perfect for making a volcano with the bean which we used as molten lava! The little dino eggs were very popular to hide amongst the white rocks within the leaves. The wooden blocks and the wooden cookie with the leaf fossil design was a perfect touch. We highly recommend this product and look forward to testing out others in our upcoming themes!
As I work my way through so many amazing themes, I am so grateful to have some amazing sponsors to embellish these lessons with such fun products to test out – from books and music to puppets and story props. It’s going to be a lot of fun testing out these resources!
Next up, I will be adding this theme into the our spring program planning which will include gardens, insects and rainbows to start! I am also very excited to be teaching the children the timing of this song now that they are becoming very familiar with the melody. They will be adding foley (the sounds within the story!) along with learning the movements for each obstacle/challenge to overcome in the stories! will keep you posted!
