ReadAbilities Publishing House Ltd. – Celebrating Neurodiversity in Children’s Literature
Samantha Clusiau-Lawlor and Renée Tessier, two long-time friends from Ottawa, are on a mission to fill a crucial gap in children’s literature. As the co-founders and authors behind ReadAbilities Publishing House Ltd., they noticed a significant lack of books featuring neurodiverse characters. Determined to make a difference, they set out to create a series of books that not only educate children and families about neurodiversity but also help remove any stigma associated with it.
Samantha and Renée aim to create a space where neurodiversity is not only accepted but also embraced. By featuring neurodiverse characters in their books, they hope to promote understanding and empathy among young readers.
We noticed that existing children’s books often focus on the differences of neurodivergent characters. We wanted to create a series of books that treat neurodivergence as a normal part of life, reflecting how these children and characters interact with the world and how others interact with them.
Samantha and Renée
Their first book, “Adventure with Moose,” introduces readers to a curious character with autism who embarks on a journey to play in the park. Through Moose’s eyes, children will discover a unique perspective on the world and learn to appreciate the beauty in everything around them.
