Youth Musical Change-Maker Raising Money for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

written by Lorrie Holmes March 8, 2024

Today we are so excited to bring to you our very special interview with Rachel Wei who is the perfect choice to represent International Women’s Day as she continues to raiser money for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, using her musical talents. At the tender age of 16, Rachel is already an accomplished virtuosic musician wielding the Piano, Violin, and Flute which is far beyond her years. The real reason she is our International Women’s Day choice today is not only for the depth of her musical talents, but even more so, for her depth of character and what she chooses to use her music for. You can also check out Rachel today as our very first Canadian Change-Maker in our growing Youth Change Maker Directory!

INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL WEI

KiDS NEWS & REViEWS: Can you tell us how you got started with your philanthropy work?

RACHEL: I visited Canuck Place for my first visit when I was five years old, my first year at Crofton House School in kindergarten. Our choir was singing Christmas carols on the porch of the house, and we were all curious as to why the children had to be so isolated from us while we were performing. Being so young, most of us paid no mind to it, but as we were leaving, I met this girl who wore the biggest smile, had the kindest eyes, and was so full of energy. But strapped to her back was an oxygen bag. It occurred to me that the joy emanating from this little girl, much like life itself, was ephemeral. As humans, our lives are lived in constant preparation for the future—it isn’t until we’re confronted with the finitude of time that we learn to make meaning of our present. And so, I felt compelled to share as much kindness and warmth with these children as I could, to communicate my love through my music, to bring them the same joy that smile had brought me. Previously, I had performed numerous times with my siblings in recitals for charity. Our first concert was when I was in grade 1, and we raised money for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. This is what gave me the idea to start hosting my own charity concerts for a cause that I cared deeply about, Canuck Place. So, after five years of preparation, I hosted my first annual charity concert for Canuck Place. So, ever since then, I have been hosting concerts for Canuck Place annually and have raised more than $40,000 over five concerts!

KiDS NEWS & REViEWS: Can you tell us why philanthropy work is so important to you and why you encourage other youth to consider doing some as well and  what it gives back to you?

RACHEL: Philanthropy is so important to me because it isn’t just about monetary donations, but it has to come from the heart. I think the most important thing is to support causes that you are passionate about through methods you are passionate about. When I help others, I don’t look for anything from anyone. But, seeing the impact that my actions have, that’s what motivates me to keep going and keep doing there work that I do and I feel a sense of fulfillment when I help others. It’s so important for youth especially to show empathy and help those who are less fortunate than us because we are the next generation of leaders. That’s why I would like to encourage all youth to step up and create change.

KiDS NEWS & REViEWS: Can you tell us what message you would like us to share with other young women on this International women’s day?

RACHEL: First, I’m fortunate to hold my concert on International Women’s Day. For me, International Women’s Day has particular significance as a day to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women worldwide. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality and to inspire further action.

Being a young woman means breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations of girls and women. It involves using creativity and empathy to address social issues and contribute to positive change in communities. It’s about leveraging one’s talents, resources, and platform to uplift others and advocate for causes that matter. In terms of inspiring other young women on International Women’s Day, sharing one’s story and experiences can be incredibly empowering. By showcasing resilience, determination, and compassion in the face of challenges, young women can serve as role models for others. They can encourage fellow young women to pursue their passions, speak up for what they believe in, and make a difference in the world, regardless of any obstacles they may encounter.

Being a young woman in this day and age is an opportunity to celebrate one’s identity, advocate for gender equality, and inspire a positive impact in the world. It’s about recognizing the power of creativity, compassion, and collaboration to make a difference and build a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

KiDS NEWS & REViEWS: Can you offer us a youth change-maker challenge to other youth – it doesn’t have to be anything too ambitious. Just something to get  them thinking about this – if you’d like to add this to your story.

RACHEL: Know that even small actions have big impacts. I challenge everyone to try to put a smile on someone’s face. Whether it be through music, an act of service, writing a card, anything works. As a musician, we always start small with performances. For example, I have a foundation called the Beacon of Music, where we perform monthly concerts for senior homes. Our youngest member is only five years old, and although he can only play 30 seconds of music, he puts a smile on every single person in the room’s face. No matter how small you may think your impact is, that’s where we all started.

Thank you so much Rachel, for inspiring us today! We look forward to following your career and announcing all of your fundraisers moving forward. Also, we have just added Rachel to our growing Change-Makers Directory as our first Canadian Change-Maker!

Thank you Canuck Place for sharing Rachel’s story with us and we look forward to sharing all of her future fundraisers both here and also at BC Parent Newsmagazine!
