Music teacher and singer/songwriter, Kim Noller’s New song, BIG is anything but small.
Written by Kim Noller
As the youngest child in a family FULL of large personalities and talent, I sometimes felt like I had to “play small” to not detract or upset others. I did somehow know that my feelings were big and important — I just couldn’t always explain them.
My days were spent playing and singing by myself for hours! I loved pretending that animals could talk, that Narnia was through the thick trees across the street, and that I was a Disney princess. As I got older, I would wander the neighborhood singing Broadway songs and often practice the speech I would give when I won a Grammy and Tony awards in front of the bathroom mirror.
Dreaming like that is fun, isn’t it? Now, as an elementary music teacher, I get to see the imagination of children every day! I also see many of them become overloaded by their big emotions.
Recently, I attended the Children’s Music Conference and met many amazing, talented and successful music artists. Big came from a conversation I had with Symon Hajjar of Hot Toast Music Co and my colleague and friend Katie Todd, about how children don’t always know what they are feeling and how to process emotions and I blurted out, “It’s not just kids! We’re all so much bigger than our bodies can hold!” My friend looked at me pointedly and said, “that would make a great song!”
The more I thought about it, I realized the truth of it. Our physical bodies are small and limiting compared to our minds and spirits. Think of all of the times you have felt overwhelmed with emotion in your lifetime.
Sometimes, your body just can’t handle the bigness of you! Your eyes leak, your heart races, you feel faint. Your human mind can actually send your body into shock! When emotions engulf us like that, it often leads to unwanted fear or shame. The little girl pretending to go to Narnia certainly experienced that! We don’t have to hide from our bigness though! When we recognize and embrace who we are and how we feel, we can take better care of ourselves and others.
I hope you and your child(ren) enjoy my song Big and feel your own bigness as you listen to its universal message.
