GETTING KIDS EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE BY ADDING PLAY TO THEIR EXPERIMENT!
Engaging children in the wonders of science became quite a special experience when adding the excitement of play into this experiment. This fun kids science experiment included scientific concepts that were demonstrated in a highly energy collaborative manner by rescuing the children’s favourite LEGO Frozen figures from the ice. Lots of group discussions and ideas were shared as possible solutions using simple household items like warm water, salt, and baking soda. This experiment not only entertained our young scientists but also educated them about how ice is formed and how it melts, making it an ideal choice to engage these young learners as a group.

For this particular experiment, I decided to pick up a fun and inexpensive Lego set – the Frozen Arendelle Frozen Castle. For just $39.99, this set offers the children to build and play with an entire Frozen Ice Castle, along with their favourite characters, Elsa and Anna, and of course, the adorable Olaf too!
FROZEN – LEGO Rescue in Action in this super fun kids science experiment!

For our ice-breaking Winter Science Experiment, this LEGO set was a perfect tool! The connection to Frozen made it so relatable to the kids who are always so in love with Elsa and Anna. The characters’ involvement with ice with Elsa being an Ice Princess and all – adds an additional layer of excitement and relativity to the learning through playing which was taking place here. It also fits seamlessly into a lesson about winter, ice, and how heat can change the state of matter, which ties beautifully with your warm water, salt, and baking soda experiment.
By conducting this experiment collaboratively during Circle Time, it encouraged a lot of group problem-solving and teamwork — skills that are vital to both learning and connecting with others in a preschool setting. The children had so much fun figuring out how to break Elsa and Anna free from the ice using the scientific principles.
Having their teacher start the process of pouring small amounts of warm water and also testing the salt and baking soda, only excited and motivated the children to all have their turns at the tuft tray after Circle Time where they all worked together to free their favourite winter story characters.
Overall, the LEGO® Disneyâ„¢ Frozen Arendelle Frozen Castle (43265) is an excellent choice for incorporating into a winter play – either in a classroom setting or even at home during play time or while homeschooling. This activity hit on so many positive learning outcomes, from collaborative play, to imaginative play, to problem solving and relating science principles to an actual fun scenario.
I would highly recommend any teacher or parent to pick up this set and try this fun activity – for just $39.99, it’s a set that your littles will have so much fun playing with after freeing these characters from the ice! If you have older siblings or school aged kids enrolled at your children’s centre, they can have fun building the set with you as a first step, and preparing the coloured water to make ice for the littles!
