Preschoolers teamed up to rescue their favorite Frozen LEGO characters from the ice with warm water, salt, and baking soda in this magical winter science experiment!

I’ve never been very good at conducting science experiments with my littles in preschool, but I think that is what can make it super fun for everyone! As long as I’m following the scientific method, adding perks that interest the kids to draw them into the learning is what it’s all about and including their all-time favourite Winter story characters was a sure thing in this case!
For this particular experiment, I decided to pick up a fun and inexpensive Lego set – the Frozen Arendelle Frozen Castle. For just $39.99, this set offers the children to build and play with an entire Frozen Ice Castle, along with their favourite characters, Elsa and Anna, and of course, the adorable Olaf too!
FROZEN – LEGO Rescue in Action!
For our ice-breaking Winter Science Experiment, this LEGO set was a perfect tool! The connection to Frozen made it so relatable to the kids who are always so in love with Elsa and Anna. The characters’ involvement with ice with Elsa being an Ice Princess and all – adds an additional layer of excitement and relativity to the learning through playing which was taking place here. It also fits seamlessly into a lesson about winter, ice, and how heat can change the state of matter, which ties beautifully with your warm water, salt, and baking soda experiment.
By conducting this experiment collaboratively during Circle Time, it encouraged a lot of group problem-solving and teamwork — skills that are vital to both learning and connecting with others in a preschool setting. The children had so much fun figuring out how to break Elsa and Anna free from the ice using the scientific principles.
Having their teacher start the process of pouring small amounts of warm water and also testing the salt and baking soda, only excited and motivated the children to all have their turns at the tuft tray after Circle Time where they all worked together to free their favourite winter story characters.
Overall, the LEGO® Disney™ Frozen Arendelle Frozen Castle (43265) is an excellent choice for incorporating into a winter play – either in a classroom setting or even at home during play time or while homeschooling. This activity hit on so many positive learning outcomes, from collaborative play, to imaginative play, to problem solving and relating science principles to an actual fun scenario.
