YOUNG OCEAN AMBASSADOR

by Young Contributors April 22, 2019

Us students are growing up in a world that faces some of its biggest environmental challenges ever, and we will be the ones living with the consequences of all of the problems the planet is facing.

Written by Shalise Leesfield, Eco-Warrior

Every year, on Earth Day, it is a great reminder that we need to show our gratitude to Mother Nature. It’s a day where we come together to help protect our home, not just for our generation but also for those still to come. Earth Day began in 1970 and this year it turns 49, so ‘Happy Earth Day’ to our awesome planet. I hope we can all use this year’s Earth Day as a starting point for great change, and make every day an Earth Day. We can do this by looking at what can be done through the whole year and make taking care of the environment a regular part of how we all live. For me personally, I think it’s so important that my generation make sure they know exactly how to take care of the Earth, as we will be the caretakers of our planet in years to come. It is important that we all know what Earth Day means, and what we can do; not just one day a year, but every day so we can work together to keep the fragile environment free from further damage.

Lee Edward Fodi is Teaching Kids How To Put Their Own Daydreaming To Good Use

Interviewed by Lorrie Holmes

Lee Edward Födi is an author, illustrator, and specialized arts educator—or, as he likes to think of himself, a daydreaming expert. He is the author of Zoone series (HarperCollins) and the Kendra Kandlestar series (Simply Read Books). He has also illustrated books for other authors. Lee teaches kids how to put their own daydreaming to good use at schools, libraries, and through workshops with the Creative Writing for Children (CWC) Society, which he co-founded in 2004. During his free time, he’s a traveler, adventurer, and maker of dragon eggs. He lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife, son, and unhelpful cat. Lee’s latest book, The Secret Of Zoon, will be released on April 9th. Published by HarperCollins, this book is the perfect middle-grade fantasy for kids ages 8 & up. Let’s see what Lee has to say about this book and all the other wonderfully magical things he’s up to.

Teaching Our Kids to Rebalance, Reset, and Ground Themselves In The Moment

by Teachers April 1, 2019

Mindfulness is allowing our thoughts to come in the front door and out the back without entertaining them or serving them tea.

Written by Sue DeCaro, Parent Coach, Educator & Conscious Living Ambassador

What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is all about living in the present moment. Many of us go through life on autopilot, sometimes not even being aware of the moment at all. We are flooded by thoughts that take us into the past or future, removing us from this time zone: the present. In this day and age, it’s affecting our children far more than we realize which is why I’m happy to share some tips that I use in my daily practice, about how these youngsters can learn to slow down and rebalance as part of their daily routines. This is key to their wellness. I am excited to be creating some wellness stories for KiDS NEWS & REViEWS, which will become part of their Integrative Health Series.

Playful Personalities

by Lorrie Holmes March 25, 2019

Because I am completely juvenile and haven’t grown up yet, I find it easy to relate to kids on that elemental level…. and I see how enthusiastically they respond to that.

Mr Doug, Children’s Performer

Mr Doug uses music, poetry, and storytelling while promoting themes that encourage positive child development. He does this quite effortlessly by engaging his audience with his unique brand of humour. Though we love Mr Doug’s appreciation for funny things, there is much more to him than just hitting our funny bones. His messages of love, self-worth, and kindness towards others resonate deeply with children, parents, and teachers alike. We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Mr Doug about the release of his Responsible Songables. I checked them out myself the other day and was very impressed with his catchy melodies, professional production, and the positive impactful lyrics and vocals that I feel will speak to the kids while also impressing their parents and teachers. I’m looking forward to testing each of these songs out in classrooms in the near future and will review them shortly. The messages in these songs are impactful but not preachy. Now let’s see what Mr Doug has to share with us about songwriting and kidding around.

MEET CHILDREN’S AUTHOR, LEE EDWARD FODI, AND HIS VERY SPECIAL VALENTINE

by Lorrie Holmes February 14, 2019

Introducing children’s author and creative writing mentor, Lee Edward Fodi, and his VALENTINE, actress and creative wonder, Marcie Nestman. They are both being interviewed here by one of Lee’s creative writing students, Chloe Kang, who he first met at CWC (Creative Writing Society for Children of British Columbia) which Lee is the co-founder of. This Valentine’s Day, we decided to focus on FRIENDSHIP + PARTNERSHIP. Having said that, we are happy to share such a story with you about what it looks like when you marry your BFF. These two lovebirds are both very creative in their own rights and a little bit nerdy as well. Let’s see what happens after they decide to join their ‘creative forces’ in a lifelong connection of their hearts and minds.

From the first time I saw you spinning on the ice, I knew you were for me, and hoped I would be for you. So be my Valentine, now and forevermore, and let’s continue this little adventure we have started together. From mountain to shore, and dawn to night, you are the one who makes everything feel right.

A LEGACY OF MUSIC

by Lorrie Holmes February 6, 2019

I can’t seem to help myself when I write songs. What comes out is the indescribably powerful emotions I feel about the most important people in my life.

Jarome Lochkrin, Singer/Songwriter

From our children to our art, our businesses to our charities of choice, there are many different kinds of legacies that we can leave behind for our loved ones; those that live on while keeping a little part of us still here in some special way. Today we are happy to introduce you to someone who is creating his own legacy, one song at a time.

WELCOME 2019!

by Lorrie Holmes January 8, 2019

We are so excited to be starting off a new year by expanding on our goals of connecting kids from across the world, through their own stories about their thoughts, feelings, and opinions about everything that is important to them. This is such a wonderful way to bridge the gap of communication and to offer more insight to us adults – parents, teachers, and caretakers alike – about what it is that is going on in the lives of our children and youth and how we can support them in this ever changing world.

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS

by Lorrie Holmes December 15, 2018

We are so excited to be sharing some Holiday Greetings & Traditions by some of our favourite children’s performers & personalities from across Canada and beyond.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that children’s performers are a breed in themselves. They certainly are and this is a very good thing! Performing for children takes a special talent as you not only have to have the chops to hold their attention, but you also need to have an extra skill set to keep things moving and grooving. We are so thrilled to be introducing regular editorial features, event listings, and news from these super talented, creative and just over all fun human beings. We are so lucky that each and every one of you made the decision to share your talents and amazing personalities with our children, youth, families and classrooms.  We look forward to keeping in touch with each and every one of you and are thrilled that many of you creative gems are already scheduled to be featured here in the near future to share our stories with us. Happy Holidays to you all!

BOBS & LOLO

“For us, the holiday season is a time to reflect and reenergize for the New Year. We spend the days with our loved ones, celebrating family and friendship and filling our hearts with music, laughter and all the usual chaos that accompanies festive fun with little ones. Wave your antlers!” — Bobs & LoLo
