This New Years Eve, we have chosen a book that encourages children to wish for what is most important to them even if it takes them a moment to figure out what this really is in the end.
Written by Kathleen Gauer and Illustrated by Sari Richter, this whimsical and charming picture book offers a very inspiring message for our young learners about being careful what you wish for.
Faye and her brother Eddie work hard at creating carvings that they carve and paint for the local market. Over time, they realize how much work this is and start to feel fatigued by this routine.
Everything changes for them on one Saturday afternoon, when they come across an old carving knife lying by the roadside. This no ordinary carving knife they are soon to discover.

These siblings are so excited to realize they can create their own wishes by carving them out with this magical knife!
As Faye and Eddie carve begin out their own wishes – from a pot of gold to an elaborate castle – they come realize that what they thought they wished for is taking them far away from home, and what is most important to them.
Faye and Eddie quickly begin to miss their humble yet cozy life in their little cozy cabin that they were accustomed to and surprisingly miss the little things they lost site of, which is all they wish for in the end.
This story is a very sweet tale that offers a lot of opportunity for meaningful classroom discussions about what is truly important to all of us.
